It was also sad that many Koreans were involved in working with the Japanese, but these atrocities were equally brutal and devastating as the bomb. Although it was terrible that the general populace were to pay for the government's acts, I don't agree with Japan's position as "Atomic victim number 1." I think the Japaneese government need to fomally apologize to the Asian countries for their atrocities before it receives any sympathy. As for American interests in dropping the bomb, it is pretty obvious that the bomb served multiple purposes. I believe that the first and formost reason was to cut down American casualties. Secondly, it was used to force the Japanese to surrender as quickly as possible. Thirdly, it was used to demonstrate American's military might to the Soviets. From the polls conducted in Hiroshima, it is obvious that the government has left out the cause to it's effect. I am an American who has read with interest your comments to the Japanese people. What you say is true, but it also applies equally to the people of the United States. Americans and Japanese alike need to re-study their own history and learn. Notice the difference? I did not see any job prospects that interested me in the limited job market created by millions of ex-GIs looking for work within a short period of time. The idea of going to college was new for me. I had never thought about or expected to go to college when I got out of high school in 1942, before going into service. After almost three years in the Army, I had matured and my priorities changed. The value of higher education became more important to me. Of primary importance, this was the first time in my life I was financially able to follow that path because of the government assistance.
