The next morning we were going about our normal duties when we noticed an odor permeating the pit area. Looking around, we found a trench nearby we had not noticed before with the bodies of two German soldiers in it who had been dead for some time. We assumed they had been holed up there as a rear-guard to slow the American troops down when the German army was retreating across the river some days before.
