Bassik says, “Take a digital picture or video of your medical problem—tennis elbow, acne, runny nose, hemorrhoids, or whatever ails you—and send it to the doctor in charge of the US Senate and your health care.” In mid-March, Allied intelligence staffs estimated that about a third of the German strength in the west was employed in Italy, and this was judged to be an important factor in the success of Overlord. Special measures were taken to make this known to the Allied troops in Italy, and it proved a useful antidote to the disappointment caused by the earlier withdrawal of troops, which had prevented the Allies from completing the conquest of northern Italy. By the early spring, Italian troops were playing a considerable role in operations against their former German partners. Their activities were mostly of the guerrilla type, but they also had some field units in action. The whole program was divided into two basic phases: individual and small unit training and then Battalion and, in one case, Regimental landings. There was training in the organization of boat teams, wire breaching, debarkation drill, demolition teams, rocket teams, flame throwers, and a dozen other aspects of invasion technique. Then during the final period, units made landings on beaches in Arzew Bay in battalion strength both at night and during the day. During these landings, it was the mission of the troops to push through a heavily fortified zone, with barbed wire entanglements, pillboxes, and tanks; to climb mountainous terrain, to land artillery from the sea, and to fight under the guns of naval support. It was the toughest single period of training that the Division had undergone. rolex booklets rolex booklets Is Knowledge Management Really an Oxymoron?, Knowledge Mapping & Management, 2002

NPR's Bob Edwards recently visited the site, where he talked with prominent veterans of the war, including former Sen. How Do You Get It? rolex booklets In the Army Group Center sector freezing weather set in during the second week of November, and while the troops chopped their tanks, guns, and vehicles out of the frozen mud, the German High Command had to decide whether to make the final thrust to Moscow immediately or wait until the next spring. No one wanted to fight in the Russian winter. Field Marshal von Bock, the army group commander, thought that he could still finish in time, and his decision apparently tipped the balance. On November 15, in cold, clear weather, the army group pushed forward and immediately began developing a sweeping double envelopment, which it intended to close east of Moscow. Two panzer groups struck north of the city, while a third approached it from the south. In the Cannon's Mouth by P J Campbell, published by Hamish Hamilton Although MacDonald has established that Longmore’s wife Elizabeth was probably the niece of one of his commanding officers, Sir Benjamin D’Urban, her researches have not, as yet, revealed the date of their marriage.9 But three facts suggest that the couple was already married in the 1820s when The Charivari was published and, presumably, written. The first is that one of their daughters died in August, 1840 at the age of twenty, and the second is that in The Scribbler for July 4, 1822 there is a transparent reference to Longmore as "Mr. Morelong" which makes mention of the misgivings of "poor Mrs. M." at the prospect of her "dear noodle-dum- dee" of a husband attending a masquerade in the "character of a knife-grinder."10 The third, and most important, is that when Longmore departed Lower Canada in late November, 1824 he had with him a wife and two children.11 It would thus appear that the character of the sententious "old bachelor" (1428),12 who narrates The Charivari is in marital status as well as age a persona, a mask behind which Longmore disappears in order to maintain the comfortable distance from the carnivalesque ribaldry and riotousness of the poem that his position as a "British military officer" required.13 Much the same logic probably dictated Longmore’s use of a pseudonym in connection with The Charivari. As well as concealing Longmore’s identity more fully than, say, "Morelong," "Launcelot Longstaff" points towards the Salmagundi Papers of Washington Irving and James Kirk Paulding, whose use of a variation of the same pseudonym ("Launcelot Langstaff") the Canadian poet would certainly have known, if only from the principal prose source of The Charivari, John Lambert’s Travels through Canada, and the United States of North America, in the Years 1806, 1807, and 1808.14 In the conduct generally pursued by those concerned in these riotous meeting, called Charivari, we can trace many things which are highly culpable, and which render the persons concerned in them, subject to severe punishment.--Such as, assembling in a riotous manner in the streets and highways, armed, having their faces blackened, or otherwise disguised--by demanding money from the King's subjects by threats and menaces--and by damaging, or partly tearing down the house and habitation of individuals, in order to enforce their demands and obtain their ends. Now we find that by St. 1, Geo. 1, St. 2, Ch. 5. (commonly called the riot-act,) it is provided,--"that if any persons unlawfully, riotously, and tumultuously assembled together, to the disturbance of the public peace, shall unlawfully and with force, demolish or pull down, or begin to demolish or pull down, any dwelling house, barn, stable or other outhouse, such demolishing or pulling down, or beginning to demolish or pull down shall by adjudged felony without benefit of clergy, and the offenders therein, shall by adjudged felons, and shall suffer death without benefit of Clergy."--And by stat: 9, Geo. 1, Ch. 22. (commonly called the black act) we find it is amongst other things enacted--"that to appear in any high road, by night or by day, with the face blackened, or with other disguise, and being armed with offensive wepons, to the breach of the public peace, and the terror of His Majesty's subjects, is felony without benefit of Clergy." As to the demanding of money with threats and violence, it may be a question, how far it will constitute robbery in this case; the circumstances alone must determine. Robbery in its general acceptation, is described to be, the felonious taking of money, or goods of any value, from the person of another, or in his presence, against his will, by violence, or putting him in fear;--there is a variety of cases which come within this description, some of which apply strongly to that before us, in regard of what is considered to be a taking by violence, and, putting in fear--for it has been held, that where there is an immediate threat of injury to the property, as by pulling down a house with a mob, which produces great alarm, and induces a man to part with his money--it is a sufficient putting in fear, to constitute robbery, which is also a capital felony. rolex booklets So fighting terrorism with terrorism and dictatorship with dictatorship is good? Press Release - 29/11/05 rolex booklets rolex booklets The first full day in camp, we lined up at the supply room. Six of us entered the building at a time and stood before a counter to be served. We called out our sizes to several men behind the counter who then headed back into the storage room to select material from stacks of bins. Those who knew their sized fared better than those who didn't. A soldier standing next to me had no idea what size he needed except for his shoes. The supply corporal, who was waiting on him looked over the counter, sized him up by eye, went back to the bins and returned with new clothing. "Try these on! If they don't fit, we'll call in the tailor," he said with a laugh, because there was no tailor. There were no chairs available so the soldier sat on the floor while he pulled on his pants. When he stood up the supply person said, "Close enough. Next!" FYI, March 16th, 2005 The Third Army mopped up the last resistance by the Germans in a couple of days, but we saw no action ourselves. We got the command, March Order by phone, loaded up our trucks, and prepared to join the convoy. Now all we had to worry about was being sent to the Pacific Theater of Operations, where the war with the Japanese was still going strong. rolex booklets Well, that and talent. She stopped me in mid sentence because she did not want to hear about her son looting in the Army. She would have called it stealing and even thinking about it was wrong in her estimation. rolex booklets The German intention was to destroy the Soviet Army west of the Dvina and Dnieper rivers. On July 3, General Halder believed that this was being accomplished. He predicted that the German forces would meet only scattered resistance east of the rivers, and Hitler concluded that the Russians had lost the war. The other officers in our battery, like all officers, had been well-indoctrinated with the caste system of the Army that set out the vast difference between the officers and enlisted men. There was no crossing over the line between the two groups. Their authoritarian attitude left no doubt they were part of a suppressive command that was to dominate the enlisted men. They would occasionally engage us in small talk, but they seldom acted like they had their hearts in it. They always gave us the impression that, yes, they knew how to be sociable, but we shouldn't forget they still gave the orders and we obeyed them. In hindsight, some of their attitude may have had to do with the person directly over them in command. They had to follow the directions and please an eccentric captain, and they had to associate with him much more closely than we did. For our part, the enlisted men met any fraternizing by the officers with smiles of ready acceptance even though those, too, were not completely earnest. We would become so firmly indoctrinated in military discipline we felt we had to respond to authority, even to what could be construed as phony social acceptance by this authority, with a favorable reception. We knew it was not an earnest attempt on their part to develop any kind of friendship, but we accepted any pleasantness as relief from the almost constant barrage of orders they put upon us. Yet, decades later in 1970, intra-company correspondence shows that Owens-Corning was still reluctant to properly label the product to indicate health hazards from asbestos: When Is a Chemical Weapon Not a Chemical Weapon rolex booklets The primary document formatting engine for Linux is TeX (pronounced TECH--the X being the Greek symbol chi). In her headnote to the poem in The Evolution of Canadian Literature in English: Beginnings to 1867 (Toronto and Montreal: Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, 1973), pp. 87-89, Mary Jane Edwards chronicles the quest for the poem’s authorship prior to MacDonald’s discoveries.[back] "There were bodies everywhere. We figured he would head back into town. Instead, he started toward the river. Evidently, he was still looking for places to set up gun positions, but we asked no questions because our thoughts were still reeling from the last thing he said about digging in out in the open park. It seemed prudent to keep our mouths shut. We had no fear the enemy could hear us across the river, but there was enough apprehension on our part words did not come naturally. We stayed close to the buildings because the moon was out and it was now quite bright. The shadows of the buildings were hiding us, or at least that's what we were hoping. We turned the corner and were now out in front of the buildings facing the river, still in the shadows, walking parallel to the river. The water was swift, and I thought the engineers were going to have a tough time navigating it in the small boats we had just seen. The moon shone silver on the water and any boats would be easily distinguishable. We were about one hundred feet in from the bank of the river, with only an occasional tree in between. We could make out the buildings and some of the finest details on the other side. I kept glancing over at several open windows in buildings facing the river. What a great places for snipers, I thought. We could not see anyone or anything moving over there except a window shutter moving in the wind. Each time I looked across, my eyes would always fix on that shutter as if it had some special meaning. It might have been because it was the only moving thing we could see. We were all in single file. Dillon was right in front of me. He kept his helmet turned toward the other side of the river. He probably figured if someone over there was taking a bead on his head, the bullet might ricochet off the helmet. Rovers held on to the lead for nearly an hour until Gunners striker Quincy Owusu-Abeyie levelled in the 63rd minute when his shot was deflected in by Sean Thornton. We wondered about the French people who had lived there. How did they feel about the total ruin of their city? Certainly they were happy to be liberated from German occupation, but at what cost? Thousands of civilians must have been killed in the battle for the city. They had lost their homes and everything else they owned that was in them. It was a heavy price to pay, and they must have had many mixed feelings about it. rolex booklets rolex booklets Know the facts. By December, Allied ground forces in the Philippines totaled about 130,000 men, 100,000 of whom were hastily mobilized Philippine Army troops lacking training and inadequately equipped. American personnel numbered only 13,507 men, who for the most part were assigned to the 31st Infantry Regiment, and various antiaircraft, armored, and harbor defense units. Other troops consisted of 12,000 dependable Philippine Scouts and 3,000 members of the Philippine Constabulary. The United States Far East Air Force, under the command of Maj. Gen. (later Lt. Gen.) Lewis H. Brereton, comprised 277 aircraft (only 142 of which were suitable for combat) and 5,609 aviation personnel. United States naval strength in the Philippines area consisted of 1 heavy cruiser, 1 light cruiser, 4 destroyers, 28 submarines, 6 gunboats, 28 aircraft, and miscellaneous vessels. This was the major portion of the United States Asiatic Fleet, commanded by Adm. Thomas C. Hart. By this time, approximately 500,000 tons of additional supplies and 20,000 troop reinforcements had been earmarked for dispatch to the Philippines, but the Japanese struck before the first shipments could arrive. Haig's Command by Denis Winter, published by Viking or Sarin (O-Isopropyl Methylphosphonofluoridate) are based on phosphorus chemicals, and this is probably what the intial Pentagon report means when they say phosphorus based compounds. For the most part, the press has bought into the line that white phosphorous is an incendiary munition, and is not properly classified as a chemical weapon. Air raid captains were designated throughout Chicago, and meetings were held on what to do in case of a raid by enemy planes. Vegetable gardens-known as Victory Gardens-were created on many empty lots in the neighborhood. Flagpoles sprang up around the neighborhood and there was always a patriotic civilian who raised and lowered the American flag every day. Nylon stockings for women went on the market for the first time, and they were a huge success because of their durability compared to the silk ones used up until that time. The new nylons were hard to get and much in demand by women. On December 1, Lt. Gen. Robert L. Eichelberger was summoned to revitalize the American front before Buna. He arrived in time to see the failure on December 2 of a major assault by the 32d Division, which depressed troop morale to probably its lowest point. After reorganization another general offensive was launched against the Buna position on December 5. It was generally unsuccessful, but one unit broke through the Japanese lines west of Buna and established a narrow corridor to the coast. Reinforcements arrived on December 15, and the village of Buna was captured. By December 17, an Australian brigade with tanks had arrived in the American sector, and an attack was made the next morning. Progress was slow but steady. By Jan. 2, 1943, the Buna position had been taken. All efforts were now directed toward Sanananda and Gona. By January 22, organized Japanese resistance had ceased, and the Papuan campaign came to an end. About 12,000 Japanese, 2,000 Australians, and 850 Americans died in this campaign. rolex booklets rolex booklets Request for comments on the July 8 World Court decision rolex booklets rolex booklets rolex booklets There was a strange phenomenon going on during and after the war, wherever there were GIs present. It was especially prevalent in debarkation ports like Antwerp. The expression, Kilroy Was Here, was written on any public display that was accessible, and nobody knew who did it (See Fig. 173). A cartoon drawing of a long-nosed smurf-like character peering over a fence usuallyKilroy was here accompanied it. The idea was for someone to find that short sentence, and sometimes the cartoon, in a place it would be least suspected. The original intent was to place it in a location such as a forward battlefield position where new arrivals would be surprised to see it. But it soon lost the surprise element and became a game where everybody was doing it. It would be in latrines, in among Army papers, on the pages of books, in church, on the side of a bus, on the bottom of a ship's bunk, and anywhere else you could think of. It was not unusual to see it written thirty or forty times in a day. It was graffiti gone amuck. The whole concept made no sense at all, but I guess that was the idea. There were many rumors about who had started the craze and legends even sprung up about it. The legend that seemed to be the most persistent gave the credit-blame might be a better word-for the first Kilroy Was Here to a shipyard inspector named Kilroy back in the States. While we were enjoying our vacation in Straubing and relishing the fact the European war was over, we still had one big worry. We thought we might be sent to the Pacific Theater of Operations (PTO) to fight the Japanese. It was difficult to judge how that war was going with the minimal amount of world new reaching us. We knew troops were being mobilized for the invasion of the Japanese Islands but that's all we knew. There were news stories about the Americans capturing certain islands, but we never knew how they fit into the overall operation. The rumors were rampant, the most persistent ones being that all but the minimum number of troops needed to keep order in the ETO would be sent in an expeditious manner to the (PTO). One day we would hear we were going to be shipped over there and the next day it would be to someplace else in Europe. As days turned into weeks with nothing happening, we began to relax and enjoy our very pleasant surroundings. rolex booklets The M-51 mount with its four .50-caliber machineguns never got off a shot. The men were so busy cocking their guns, by the time they did shoot, the planes were gone.
