As the training continued, many things became easier to take. We began to move the thoughts of civilian life out of our minds and accept army life as the norm. The strenuous life we were leading and the authoritarian administration of our activities by the likes of Sergeant Monteleone and the cadre members were taken as a matter of course. Thoughts of family and civilian friends became less frequent until they became something rare. When we thought about the future, it was about what the Army had in store for us tomorrow, not wondering when we were going home. In the last week of the war the German armies on the eastern front all had one objective: to escape capture by the Russians. North and west of Berlin the Third Panzer, Twenty-first, and Twelfth armies succeeded in making agreements with United States Army commands which allowed them to pass through American lines. Army Group Center's Fourth Panzer, Seventeenth, and First Panzer armies were farther east on the upper Elbe River and in Czechoslovakia. After the unconditional surrender in Reims on May 7 (a second surrender ceremony was held in Berlin on May 9), they attempted a mass escape to the west but were stopped forward of the American-Soviet demarcation line, and nearly all of them, or about 1,000,000 men, passed into Soviet captivity. Some troops of Army Groups South, E, and Courland escaped in the last days, but most fell prisoner to the Russians. All told, the Russians took about 2,000,000 prisoners in the days immediately preceding and following the surrender. When Japanese forces moved into northern French Indochina in September, the United States reacted with an embargo on scrap iron and steel, and when they also moved into southern Indochina, in July 1941, all Japanese assets in the United States were frozen. Similar action by Great Britain and the Netherlands affected shipments of oil from the East Indies. This created such a critical situation for Japan that its cabinet decided that, unless the United States made concessions, the oilfields to the south would be seized by military operations. The technological advance that proved most fruitful for the British in the antisubmarine campaign was microwave radar. German submarines while on the surface were able to detect enemy use of long-wave radar and could submerge in time to avoid attack. They failed, however, to discover that microwave radar was being employed against them until 1944, with the result that surface vessels were able to approach close enough to a submarine before it submerged to get it on the sonar. Coastal Command aircraft were eventually fitted with this type of radar. Used in conjunction with the Leigh light, a powerful searchlight controlled by the radar set, it was able to surprise surfaced submarines, which could be attacked before they submerged. Only one person was able to contact anyone. His father was a Chicago police sergeant, so he yelled his father's name out the window of the train to one of the policemen standing on the platform. In about twenty minutes the man's father showed up. Army MPs were stationed along the platform to assure we did not get off or anyone got onto the train. The cop found the car where his son was located and, as he headed toward the door, an MP tried to stop him but he was no match for this burly streetwise cop. He brushed the young MP aside like he was swatting a fly. As more MPs converged on the scene, they decided to make this one exception because the situation also drew more policemen. A number of us who got to meet the sergeant gave him our phone numbers in Chicago so he could call our parents to tell them we were headed east. We could speculate about where we were going, but the only thing we knew for sure was the direction we were headed. After we left the station, the train headed south and then turned east again. I knew we were passing my old neighborhood on the south side of the city when I spotted the large, brightly illuminated sign of the Avalon Theater. It brought back many fond memories of my days as a civilian because it was only a few blocks from where I would hang out with my civilian buddies. Soon after, the train passed less than a block from where my parents lived, but it was raining hard at the time and I did not get a good look at my old neighborhood. If there is another writer who looms almost as large as Byron in the local debts and large patterns of The Charivari, it is Shakespeare. No doubt at least in part because of the fondness for amateur dramatics in British garrisons, allusions to Hamlet, Othello, Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest, Much Ado About Nothing, The Comedy of Errors, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Merry Wives of Windsor,92 and even Timon of Athens, dot The Charivari like raisins in a spotted dick. An epigraph from the first scene of Much Ado About Nothing announces the poem’s concern with the marriage and anxieties of an elderly "bachelor," and an echo of Puck’s closing speech in A Midsummer Night’s Dream brings down the curtain on Baptisto’s charivari and pushes home the point that, thanks to the good sense of a decidedly unsupernatural "‘Prince of goodfellows’" (1379), all is well that has ended well. As if to emphasize the potential for tragedy in what is happening, Longmore embeds allusions to Othello ("Chaos had come again") and Macbeth ("‘Give physic to the dogs’" ) in the stanzas between the alarming onset of the charivari and its happy resolution. In the poem as a whole, however, the allusions are more to Shakespeare’s comedies than to his tragedies, and, most frequently of all, to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Indeed, so frequent, and, as important, explicit, are Longmore’s allusions to this play that they ask The Charivari to be seen as a midwinter night’s dream—an excursion into the realm between dusk and dawn where nightmares and disasters can occur but, in the event, do not because the poem’s presiding goddess is "Thalia" (4), the muse of comedy, whose specialities are "gaiety, briskness, . . . pleasantry"93 and, of course, happy endings. how to tell a fake rolex (http://www.emergency.com/lapdbank.htm) how to tell a fake rolex The whole crew inside came awake, and we all jumped down from the two windows onto the concrete outside. We could be killed by our own crewmembers, who we knew had spent most of the evening drinking wine and were quite merry if not downright drunk. Dillon handed me his rifle and went racing up the ramp flapping his arms up and down, yelling, “Don’t shoot, don’t shoot!” The last chapter of Weintraub's book is entitled "What If — ?" This is counterfactual history at its best and he sets out what he believes the rest of the 20th century would have been like if the soldiers had been able to cause the Christmas Truce of 1914 to stop the war at that point. Like many other historians, he believes that with an early end of the war in December of 1914, there probably would have been no Russian Revolution, no Communism, no Lenin, and no Stalin. Furthermore, there would have been no vicious peace imposed on Germany by the Versailles Treaty, and therefore, no Hitler, no Nazism and no World War II. With the early truce there would have been no entry of America into the European War and America might have had a chance to remain, or return, to being a Republic rather than moving toward World War II, the "Cold" War (Korea and Vietnam), and our present status as the world bully. Second, money was starting to run low, and it soon would be gone. That Hitler began to think about Norway was not entirely Quisling's work. Soviet aggression against Finland had aroused strong sympathy for the Finns and had unleashed a wave of anti-German sentiment in Scandinavia. While Germany took a neutral stand that favored the Soviet Union, the Allies had begun talking about sending troops to help the Finns. By noon we had been there for almost five hours, and we had seen no one but each other. There was no traffic. We were all getting tired, restless, and hungry as we had not eaten since breakfast. Because the ground was wet, and because we did not want to get our neatly pressed uniforms dirty, we had been standing in one place the entire time. At about 1330 hours, Jeeps and command cars started to come by with officers leaning out yelling, "Present arms! Present arms!" This meant we were to stand at attention with heels together, staring straight ahead, and holding our rifle in a vertical position, right in front of us. After about fifteen minutes of being in this uncomfortable position, not having eaten since early morning, and because of the boredom of it all, we started to wear down. The vehicles with officers kept coming, and we heard the same call to attention several dozen times. The enlisted men were grumbling to themselves, "We heard you the first time," or, "Don't panic fellows, it's only the President." On May 5 and 6, Japanese landing barges approached the northern shores of the island. The Allied light field guns, which had been kept protected from bombardment, went into action and sank many of the barges, but the Japanese gained a foothold ashore. Wishing to end hostilities before nightfall (since his enemy by then might be among the many sick and wounded in Malinta Tunnel), General Wainwright offered the surrender of Corregidor to General Homma on the afternoon of May 6. The Japanese commander insisted on the surrender of all troops in the Philippines. The situation was such that the American commander had no choice; he complied at midnight, May 6. He was like a bad actor in a complex play, and like an audience, we were both embarrassed for him and disgusted at the same time. He instructed us daily on how to recognize the line that should never be crossed between the officers and enlisted men. What power he had over the enlisted men, and, oh, how he loved to use it, even on the most mundane issues. One example of this was his method of saluting. The procedure was for the enlisted man to salute the officer and hold the salute until the officer returned it. Most officers gave a quick and snappy response, but not McKee. He made sure the interval between the two salutes lasted as long as possible. It clearly conveyed the message: "I'll salute when I'm good and ready to do so and you can just sweat it out until I do." What vainglory! Great as their successes were, however, the Russians lacked the military finesse to turn their opportunities to full account. The grand design, the encirclement of Army Group Center, was not executed. The Demyansk, Kholm, and other smaller pockets came into existence largely because Hitler refused his units permission to maneuver. By mid-February, the Soviet offensive had lost most of its momentum and appeared no longer to have any objective other than to gain additional ground and inflict random damage on the Germans. In the first week of the month, Army Group Center managed to anchor its front on the north around Rzhev, and in the second and third weeks fresh divisions began moving in from the west to narrow the gap to Army Group North.
